Monday Ubani, the chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association’s (NBA) Section of Public Interest and Development (SPIDEL), has requested the NBA to take disciplinary action against the controversial Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, who also practices law.
“I never saw the kind of brazenness displayed by a public official, and I know the Nigerian Bar Association would bring up this problem with the issue of punishment on that lawyer. He never behaved well at all, and he never done Nigeria justice, according to Ubani, who spoke on Wednesday’s episode of Korrect New’s podcast.
“He (Adamawa REC) must go by all of the due process requirements set down by the Act, and there is nothing anyone can do to prevent him from doing so. You acted incorrectly, and I am grateful that INEC corrected it as a result of the uproar.
He claimed that INEC’s stance against justification for wrongdoing was a reflection of public outrage.
“There are problems; one of them is impunity, which has developed in this nation as a result of the lack of punishment for crimes, and I am extremely pleased that the institution quickly made this particular correction in response to public uproar.
When the PDP was in power, they committed all of these crimes while getting away with it and demanded that you appear in court.
Audit, Comprehensive
The SPIDEL Chairman pleaded with INEC to conduct an appropriate investigation into the defective declaration procedure and added that those responsible should be held accountable.
“There is nothing wrong with carrying out what we call a comprehensive audit, comprehensive investigation of what transpired in Adamawa and to know those behind what has happened,” he said.
“There is nothing improper about doing a thorough inquiry of what happened. Who or what was at fault? Who gave him permission to make unfounded results announcements?
“Who are these armed security personnel with him? Who gave them permission to be with him? Why would he?
The lawyer claimed that these disciplinary measures will restore public trust in the legal system.
